Lithium oversupply meets a structurally growing demand base

Price weakness has curtailed marginal supply while underlying consumption continues to expand.

The lithium market illustrates the difference between a cyclical surplus and a structural one. Conversion capacity was built faster than demand materialised, and prices corrected sharply. Underlying battery demand, however, has continued to grow through the correction.

The consequence is a familiar commodity pattern: curtailment of high-cost supply now, followed by a delayed and inadequate response when demand catches up.
